چکیده

It is well known that electrons passing through a magnetic undulator emit partially coherent radiation: `Undulator Synchrotron Radiationa. Radiation from electrons, entering the undulator at random, adds incoherently. If the electron beam is periodically modulated (bunched) to pulses shorter than the radiation wavelength, electrons radiate in phase with each other, resulting in super-radiant emission at the bunching frequency. Introduction of a signal at the input of the prebunched beam FEL, results in stimulated super-radiant emission. The interaction between the electromagnetic wave and a synchronous modulated e-beam results in ampli"cation of the signal wave in addition to the spontaneous super-radiant emission. We demonstrated and measured the super-radiant emission in a wide band of frequencies from 3.15 to 5.5 GHz using the mini-FEM of Tel-Aviv University, wherein pre-bunching at the radiation frequency is accomplished with the aid of a traveling-wave prebuncher. The measured upper synchronous frequency is centered about 4.5 GHz and the lower synchronous frequency is just above cuto! (near 3.153 GHz). Analytical models, computer simulations and experimental results of a pre-bunched free-electron laser operation are presented and compared. The power levels that can be achieved are discussed. The measured results agree well with results predicted theoretically and obtained by a 3D simulation code. ( 2000 Published by Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Superradiant and stimulated superradiant emission in a prebunched beam free-electron maser.

An electron beam, prebunched at the synchronous free-electron laser frequency and passing through a magnetic undulator, emits coherent (superradiant) synchrotron undulator radiation at the bunching frequency. If an external electromagnetic wave is introduced into the interaction region, at the same frequency and at a proper phase, the radiation process will be stimulated (stimulated prebunched ...

Free electron maser experiment with a prebunched beam

An experimental project aimed at demonstrating Free Electron Maser (FEM) operation with prebunching is under way at Tel-Aviv university. The FEM utilizes a 1.0 A prebunched electron beam obtained from a microwave tube. The electron beam is bunched at 4.87 GHz and is subsequently accelerated to 70 keV. The bunched beam is injected into a planar wiggler (B, = 300 G, A, = 4.4 cm) constructed in a ...

Single-mode selection and axial mode control in a free-electron maser oscillator using a prebunched electron beam.

The effects of electron-beam prebunching on the radiation buildup process in a free-electron maser oscillator operating in the frequency range of 4–5 GHz were studied. An electron beam of 10 keV, 1 A was prebunched by means of a microwave tube section, accelerated to 70 keV, transported through a drift region by a solenoidal magnetic field and injected into a linearly polarized wiggler in which...

Efficiency enhancement of free electron Maser oscillator by mode selection with a prebunched electron beam

We present a method for enhancing the efficiency of a Free Electron Laser Maser oscillator by locking it to a preferred resonator mode. This is done by prebunching of the e beam before injection into the wiggler. In a free running oscillator, the longitudinal mode that dominates the mode competition process during the oscillation buildup period is usually the highest gain mode. However, this mo...

Enhancement of FEM radiation by prebunching of the e-beam (stimulated super-radiance)

An electron beam (e-beam) prebunched at the synchronous FEM frequency and traversing through a waveguide, located coaxially with a magnetic undulator, emits coherent radiation at the bunching frequency. Introduction of both a premodulated e-beam and a radio-frequency (r.f.) signal at the same frequency at the input of the waveguide can lead to more efficient interaction, and thus more power can...
